GUAYUSA (gwhy-you-sa) is a naturally caffeinated herbal tea harvested from the Amazonian rainforest in Ecuador. It comes from the leaves of the ilex guayusa tree. The Kichwas have drunk guayusa ritually since ancient times. Our co-founder native Ecuadorian Sandy, remembers her Abuelita (Grandma) lovingly making the tea every morning.
Guayusa tea has twice the antioxidants as green tea and all 15 essential amino acids, in particular Leucine, which is not incorporated in our bodies and is needed to build and repair muscle tissue. It also has chlorogenic acids which could be beneficial for the heart and help with weight loss.
Guayusa contains ferulic acid which can help improve blood circulation.
It has about the same amount of a cup of coffee but without the coffee jitters or crash. Guayusa provides a sustained energy without the jitters or crash often associated with coffee or other caffeinated drinks.
Because guayusa does not contain tannins the taste is smooth and not bitter. It has a natural sweetness, so if you are trying to cut down on sugar, it is the perfect tea for you. Guayusa pairs very well with lemon for a healthy iced tea.
Our guayusa is grown organically on small family farms called "chakras" The farmers replant the guayusa faster than they harvest it. This helps to conserve the rainforest. The farmers are also provided with a sustainable income.
